Summary of Policy at St Crispin's

We are now able to offer full Internet access to our students. The service is now filtered and we will be able to monitor the sites visited by the students. Students using the PCs for Internet access during lessons, at lunchtime and after school will be expected to keep to the rules outlined below. We recognise the need to develop the "information literacy" of all members of the school. Students and indeed staff will be encouraged to collaborate on projects to encourage the sharing of best practice and to help develop knowledge, skills and understanding when using the Internet.
Before being allowed to use the Internet, all pupils will be made aware of the rules and we will draw parents' attention to the existence of this policy. Whilst our aim for Internet use in the school is exclusively to further educational goals and objectives, pupils may find ways to access other materials as well. The Internet is a very powerful "real world" resource and has to be treated with respect and used with discretion. We are using a powerful filtering system and so we feel confident that incidents of students accessing questionable sites will be very rare.
We believe that the benefits to pupils from access to the Internet, in the form of information resources and opportunities for collaboration, exceed any disadvantages. But ultimately, parents and guardians of minors are responsible for setting and conveying the standards that their children should follow when using media and information sources. To that end, we support and respect each family's right to decide whether or not to approve access.
We will have no hesitation in withdrawing a student's access to ALL Information Technology in the school if he/she is found to be misusing the resource repeatedly. We have developed a set of guidelines for Internet use and these rules will be made available to all pupils and kept under constant review.

The school e-mail can be accessed from home.

We expect all students to abide by rules laid down in the ICT code of conduct when using e-mail. Students will discuss in lessons the "netiquette" of using e-mail. The network management team monitor the inboxes of the students.

Information to Students
You are responsible for good behaviour on the Internet just as you are in all aspects of life at school. The school Code of Conduct applies at all times.
Internet access at the school is provided for the purpose of educational research and not for more general "surfing for fun". During lessons teachers will guide students towards appropriate materials. Outside lessons you must only access sites which are appropriate for use in school.
Pupil access to the Internet is a privilege and not a right.
The following activities are not permitted:
  1. Sending or displaying offensive messages or pictures
  2. Using obscene language
  3. Downloading software
  4. Violating copyright laws
  5. Printing material without permission from a member of staff
  6. Reading or sending e-mail without permission from a member of staff
  7. Employing the network for commercial purposes
  8. Accessing chatlines and game sites
  9. Using others' passwords
  10. Trespassing in others' folders, work or files
  11. Attempting to by pass the proxy settings
  12. Visiting 'social networking' sites e.g. Bebo and MySpace.
Failure to comply with these rules will result in the loss of access and further disciplinary action may be taken if appropriate. If applicable, external agencies may be involved.
